I decided last week to stop opening packages as they come in so that I’ll have a pile of packages to open on my birthday proper, Monday the 13th.  Now I’ve decided to crank up the anticipation and surprise factors even more.  I have spent hours pouring over Amazon and picking out 30 things I would love to receive for my birthday and Valentine’s Day.  Then, I closed the window, and I’m not going to look at the list again until after my birthday.  This is terrifying, I hope I can do it!  I wonder if I can block the website on my computer until a designated date?

What can I say? This lifestyle I lead makes it sometimes too possible to fade deep into my own head for a long time and confront the terrible and wonderful things there. So, sometimes I disappear for a little while. However, in the long term, I’m not going anywhere, don’t worry! All of my adult life, I’ve been a smoker, and I’m finally sick enough of it to be very serious about quitting. I have a plan, a process, a support network, and a quit date, and the more people I tell the more humiliating it would be to not follow through, so I’m extremely confident.

Of course, being me, I want to be spoiled and made much of as I step up to the challenge! Starting in early October, in particular, lots of adoring, distracting e-mail would be wonderful, even if I’m even less responsive than usual.

I’ve also created an IndieGoGo campaign to make it very simple to contribute to an easier, happier few weeks of getting over the addiction. I’m not feeling excessively pushy or manipulative about it, just now, more extremely curious what the response will be. And a little nervous at the idea of increasing the pool of people with an investment in my success, I admit!

I know some of you are wishing that I would have taken advantage of the habit in the past few years by making smoking videos for you. I was tempted, that would have felt like some fun money, having a reason forcing me to smoke! Which is exactly why I avoided it, protecting my freedom to quit, which it is now my pleasure to exercise.

Fear not, this quest is not distracting me from getting new sessions ready for my Treasures! I did a lot of sexy writing tonight, and you can keep looking forward to hearing my voice very soon…

I was so very well-geared up, which made me feel very spoiled indeed.  (Everyone who contributed to my comfort via my Amazon lists in the past month or so should go over and check out the recently updated thank yous on the purchased side!)  It feels incredible to go into that environment feeling so perfectly prepared not just for survival, not just for comfort, but for creative, exquisite, alien play. It’s amazing how just arriving in Black Rock City makes one feel like a total badass.

I also got way more daring with my hair than I ever have in my life, and I’m loving it enough that I am maintaining it this way for at least a while longer. Here are some pics from the day before I headed out to the playa:

Both the cut and the color are outside the comfort zone I have played in with my hair before, and trying something so different makes me feel really delightfully free. It’s also interesting to watch other people’s reactions, a challenge, as most people seem to prioritize pretending like there’s nothing abnormal, good or bad, about my look. Now that I’m back in Indiana, that is. In everything burn related, my hair definitely made me feel more consistently accepted throughout the BM community. It seems that taking the time and effort to get vibrant unnatural hair colors builds a tremendous amount of social cred in that situation. I’m rarely at risk for being mistaken for a spectator on the playa, but the hair felt like a guarantee, an acceptable costume to prove sincerity for any activity.

As for what those activities were… Who can remember, exactly? I remember knowing that I must, must have traveled through some sort of inter-dimensional portal at some point along the way, to have come to such a strange and wonderful convergence of unlikely stimuli. It shouldn’t be surprising that the return journey strips away the tangibility of the memories, leaving just the craving to immediately launch into preparations for the next window to visit that city of dust, lights, and regularly occurring ridiculous improbabilities. I think every burner knows at least five stories about things that actually happened but sound like they must be made up.
